A small, personal list of the places worth slowing down for — across Funchal, the southern coast, and the mountains above the clouds. We update it between seasons.
Funchal
Zona Velha — the painted doors
Cobblestone lanes of the old town, where artists painted more than two hundred weathered doors between the cafés. Come after dusk, when the lamps are lit and espetada is on every corner.
10 min walk from the marina · free to wander
Funchal
Mercado dos Lavradores
The farmers' market, in a 1930s Art Deco hall. Tropical fruit, passionflower, orchids, and the auction of black-scrimshaw swordfish at the back. Mornings only — go before ten.
Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas · closed Sundays
Funchal
Monte & the tropical garden
Take the cable car up to Monte, wander the palace gardens, then come down the switchbacks in a wicker toboggan the way Madeira has done for a hundred and thirty years.
Cable car from the old town · toboggan €25 p/p
Coast & villages
Cabo Girão skywalk
The highest cliff in Europe at five hundred and eighty metres, with a glass platform out over the drop. Best on a clear morning — the farming terraces at Câmara de Lobos sit impossibly small below.
20 min drive west of Funchal · €2 entry
Coast & villages
Câmara de Lobos harbour
The little bay where Churchill painted watercolours. Painted boats, poncha at the Taberna Rui, and a sunset that closes over the headland. Walk to the east for the wine cellars at Estreito.
15 min drive west · sunset is the hour
Mountains & levadas
Levada das 25 Fontes
The classic Madeiran walk: a narrow water channel through the laurel forest to a green amphitheatre of twenty-five waterfalls. Wear boots — the path is damp and the tunnels are low.
Rabaçal trailhead · 45 min from Funchal
Mountains & levadas
Pico do Areeiro at sunrise
Drive up before first light and stand above a sea of cloud. From the third-highest peak, a ridge path leads toward Pico Ruivo — only for calm days and steady feet.
1,818 m · drive 40 min from Funchal
